Distinctions

((Blackmail)) Daidoji

Affect of Harmlessness (Air)
Types: Mental, Social
Effects: The following apply to a character with the Affect of Harmlessness distinction:
  • You appear earnest and perhaps a bit hapless, and your flaws generally come off as charming, at least at first glance. Additionally, people tend to underestimate you, and this works to your benefit.
  • When performing a check to ingratiate yourself with a stranger (such as a Courtesy [Air] check to be pleasant to someone of higher social status or a Performance [Air] check to conceal your true intentions toward a social equal), you may reroll up to two dice.
Subtle Observer (Air)
Types: Interpersonal, Mental
Effects: The following apply to a character with the Subtle Observer distinction:
  • You can understand the cues that people give off while speaking, and you can read people’s lips and facial expressions to understand what they are saying, even if you cannot hear them.
  • When performing a check for which you need to spot or use small details of other people nearby (such as a Courtesy [Air] check to reveal an unpleasant truth pleasantly or a Sentiment [Air] check to detect someone else’s weaknesses), you may reroll up to two dice.

Traditionalist (Earth)
Types: Mental, Social
Effects: The following apply to a character with the Traditionalist adversity:
  • You're old blood, all Rokugani, all the way back to the dawn of the empire. It's not your fault you're just better than all those so called "new citizens" at the edges of the empire, let alone the halfbreeds. It's also not your fault they're intensely jealous of your superior lineage and talents, no matter how much they hold it against you. Which they do. Constantly.
  • When performing a check to interact socially with the New Citizens or those descended from them, such as Command[Fire] to demand the respect you're due, or Courtesy[Earth] to get them to submit to your superior reasoning, you must choose and reroll two dice showing success or explosive success. If this causes you to fail, gain a void point.

Passions

Pot-Stirrer (Fire)
Types: Mental
Effects: The following apply to a character with the Pot-Stirrer passion:
  • After spending a few minutes studying a room, you can extrapolate who might have a grudge against whom, which two people are on edge around each other, and other social pressure points you could exploit.
  • After performing a check to stir up social chaos (such as a Courtesy [Fire] check to incite anger in someone about a perceived insult or a Theology [Fire] check to encourage two people to argue about the finer points of their religious beliefs), you remove 3 strife.

Anxieties

Vanity(Void)
Types: Interpersonal, Mental
Effects: The following apply to a character with the Vanity anxiety:
  • You are hyperfocused on your physical appearance, and you truly believe you should be adored for your beauty.
  • After performing a check in which your physical appearance is in jeopardy or is being challenged (such as a Courtesy [Void] check to explain your plan to someone you perceive as more beautiful than you or a Survival [Void] check to perform sweat-inducing labor in order to make camp), you receive 3 strife. If this is the first time this has occurred this scene, gain 1 Void point.

Outfit

Sanctified robes, concealed armor, wakizashi (short sword), bō (staff) or knife, three shuriken (throwing stars), calligraphy set, scroll satchel, traveling pack, tessen, 5 koku 40 zeni

Twenty Questions

1 I am of the Scorpion Clan +1 Air, +1 Skullduggery , 35 status 2 I’m a Soshi, but my family adopted that name after the Yogo ceased to exist +1 Void, +1 Composition, +1 Theology Glory 39 3 I am a Wardmaster (+1 Earth, +1 Water. +1 Composition, +1 Theology, and +1 Fitness) 4 I’m known for the stability of my wards (+1 Earth) 5 While I’m known for my skill at debate +3 (Courtesy), I got entered into the rainbow games because the fox in the shrine where I studied suggested to my Sensei that I be entered 6 I feel the need to make a connection, a friend, a relationship, but it scares me, because I can’t allow myself to become vulnerable, and I’m told that’s necessary for a true relationship 7 It’s good (Martial Arts: Melee) 8 I respect Bushido. It is incredibly important, and I try to live by its tenets as best I can (+1 Skullduggery) 9 Affect of Harmlessness 10 Traditionalist 11 Pot Stirring 12 Anxiety (Vanity) 13 My aunt, Bayushi Hayami. You might expect me to say my sensei, and he taught me a lot, but my aunt is a member of the Imperial Court, and a handmaid to the Empress. Of all the things she taught me, and they were a lot of things, what sticks out is the way that people shout out information about themselves when they think they're not saying a word. (Subtle Observer) 14 It would be my mask, I think. It’s a stylish red and gold lacquer mask that was a gift to me from my parents. Maybe I’m flattering myself, but I think people who see it are impressed. 15 I never get stressed, but I suppose if I had to give an answer it would be that I tend to get overly pedantic and, well, I suppose some would say condescending. No, I don’t know why people would say “more condescending than normal”. That’s just rude, 16 My feelings about the other clans:

Crane: Our biggest and oldest rivals at Court They pretend to be too polite and sophisticated for underhanded tactics, and love reminding people ‘The Scorpion can’t be trusted’. Usually that language comes from the Daidoji. Still, they’re not to be underestimated, and can usually be counted on to help discourage any flights of fancy or ill thought out plans in court.

Lion: Blunt to the point of annoyance, self righteous, and think that anything can be settled if you have enough swords. Still, they can be useful to rely on if you need enough swords, and the Scorpion and the Lion have worked together before

Crab: Make the Lion look like diplomats. Still, they have a difficult task, and the creatures of the Shadowlands really can’t be negotiated with, so it makes sense. As unpleasant as some of them are personally, one must bless their work.

Dragon: They spend a lot of time in their mountains, and they’re devout students of the Little Teacher. So they’re to be praised for that. I wonder sometimes if they overrate his importance and consider him a Kami, though

Scorpion: The best clan. Pillars of Bushido, supporters of the Empire, and the most noble and most honorable clan in the Empire.

Phoenix: Talented theologians and Shugenja. It’s a shame about the….unfortunate incident a long time ago.

Orachi, Owl, Unicorn: I thought you wanted to know my opinion of the major clans of the Empire?

17 My parents always said I was very sensitive to the way that other people feel and act (Sentiment +1) 18 Mysterious puzzle box from the Burning Sands 19 I’m at my shrine, inside, offering rice to the kami. The shrine is otherwise empty. I’m holding the bowl, and suddenly, it bursts into flames. Startled, I drop it, and the fire starts spreading. There’s a door, a screen that leads to another room, and I realize there’s someone in there, someone I care about. I burst through the screen, burning myself, but the room is empty. That’s when I wake up 20 SometimesI dream I’m travelling somewhere, but I always wake up before I get there. Where am I going, and what will I find there? I think I will never know.
